The De-Escalation and Face-to-Face Management of Aggression in Mental Health Settings (including disengagement and breakaway techniques) |
Aims:
- to disseminate useful theoretical strategies for use in de-escalatory situations
- to disseminate relevant legal understanding of issues around the use of force with the service-users
- to facilitate a selection of effective verbal de-escalation skills
- to facilitate a selection of personal safety and disengagement techniques
Content:
This 2-day program consists of the following sessions:
- The Kaplan & Wheeler model of aggression
- De-Escalation Strategies: theoretical understanding
- De-Escalation Strategies: practical skills (role play and experiential)
- The Legal Framework and the Use of Force
- Personal Safety: Use of Space & Environment as Resources
- Disengagement Skills: Low Risk Avoidance and Release Techniques
- High Risk Immediate Escape Techniques
Target Audience:
all staff with potentially aggressive service user involvement, including ward administrators, housekeeping, catering assistants, some clinician groups
