Amber can train your staff in a hierarchy of aggression management interventions. At Amber we utilize the Kaplan & Wheeler Assault Cycle to view the pathway of aggression and focus interventions accordingly. The Amber Model of Aggression Management Strategies focus at 3 different levels depending on your needs as an organization and the need of the individual service-user: Low-restrictive; Medium-Restrictive and High-Restrictive strategies:

Low-Restrictive Strategies:

Indicative Low-Restrictive Behaviors

  • Early stages of anger
  • Characterized by frustration / distress
  • Isolative, withdrawn
  • Pacing, tense
  • Typically risk of property damage
  • Has some element of control
  • Low risk of immediate harm, potentially escalating
  • Requires low-restrictive interventions to prevent escalation

Low-Restrictive Interventions  

  • a range of interpersonal conflict resolution skills
  • operational measures such as conducting risk assessments or implementing care plans
  • developing an enhanced theoretical understanding of aggression within your specific area
  • effective de-escalation, ‘talk-down' and diffusion strategies  

Medium-Restrictive Strategies:

Indicative Medium-Restrictive Behaviors

  • Angry and potentially aggressive
  • Expresses aggression outwardly
  • Potentially physically aggressive
  • Threatening
  • Attempted / actual aggression
  • Beginning to lose self-control
  • Potential risk of harm / injury without intervention
  • Requires medium-restrictive interventions to prevent escalation and / or to maintain safety

Medium-Restrictive Interventions

  • A range of personal safety / disengagement techniques
  • A hierarchy of physical interventions to hold, guide and support the service-user
  • Emergency / Coordinated team techniques
  • Walking and escorting techniques
  • Seated de-escalation techniques

High-Restrictive Strategies:

Indicative High-Restrictive Behaviors

  • Actual aggression
  • Expresses aggression physically
  • Serious threats
  • Assaultive
  • Risk of / actual injuries without intervention

High-Restrictive Interventions

  • Range of secure holds
  • Team approaches
  • Planned / crisis management interventions
  • Interventions require rapid tailoring / adjusting dependent on levels of risk
